Mumbai has a lot of places to visit. This is a city of dreams and people come here to fulfil their dreams. Even if you are just travelling to Mumbai there are plenty of things which you should not miss seeing here.
One of those places is the JijamataUdyan which is popularly known as the Mumbai zoo. There is another common name of this place which is Byculla zoo. This is a place which covers an area of 52 acres and this place is situated at the midst of the city. This zoo is located exactly in between the Mumbai central station and the Byculla station. The actual name of this place is VeermataJijabaiBhosaleUdyan which later reduced to just JijamataUdyan. People also call this place by the name Rani Baug.
This zoo was established in the year 1861 and it has full of lush greeneries. This place is famous for varieties of bird species found here. This zoo was primarily built by a Jewish businessman in then Bombay and his name was David Sassoon. At present this is taken over by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Inside this zoo there is a grand tower clock known as the Victoria tower clock and the entrance of the zoo is a botanical garden full of greeneries which gives you way to the actual zoo.
Couple of years back, this zoo was sent a legal notice because it was not maintained properly and the atmosphere became very filthy and unhygienic. Then this zoo was closed down and major maintenance work started here to bring it back to a nice condition. Then this place was re-opened and there was no filthier atmosphere here. The dirty waters around crocodiles and hippopotamus were removed with fresh waters.
It is said that at present, here are at least 3213 trees in total in this zoo and these trees belong to at least 57 different families of trees. These trees belong to 285 listed species and there are more than 30 species of trees which are endangered at present. So, one can find some rarest species of trees here.
At present, the number of mammals present here are 189 and they are divided into 20 species. Here one can find more than 450 birds which belong to 38 different species. The common wild animals which one can find in this zoo are elephants, hippopotamus, crocodiles, lions, and tigers, black monkeys which are commonly known as languor’s and black spotted dears. Few species of sales are also found here in the reptile section which one can find at the left corner just after the entrance at the zoo.
This zoo has a 3D theatre now after the revamp process is done and also a theme park which will be very exciting for the children. There are animal rides and gift shops to make this place more entertaining and lovely. One can find different toes of gardens here like tactile gardens for the visually impaired people, butterfly garden, medicinal garden and many more.
One can reach this place by taking a local train and then either reaching Mumbai central station or the Byculla station. The zoo opens at 10.30 in the morning and gets closed at 5.30 in the evening. One can enjoy a lot here.
