Food, glorious food – it seems that one of man’s favourite pastimes is – you guessed it – eating. And why not? With the amazing variety of food and cuisines out there, we should all make it a point to try something delicious at least once in our lives. And, if by chance we like what we have tried, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t go back to it again… and again… and again.
One of the most delicious cuisines today – and fast gaining tremendous popularity – is Vietnamese food. If you ask someone what they think of Vietnamese food, they will probably tell you that it can be spicy yet refreshing, with a great contrast in flavours and textures that is second to none.
So if you are interested in trying out some delectable Vietnamese delicacies, these snacks should be at the top of your list.
- Pho
When it comes to Vietnamese food, Pho is one quintessential dish that seemingly signifies what Vietnamese food is all about. Pho is actually a noodle dish – rice noodles, to be precise – which is only differentiated by what parts or cuts of meat are included in it. You can have Pho with chicken or beef, but the greens will usually remain the same – bean shoots or sprouts, wedges of lime, cilantro, basil, mint, and other typical Vietnamese condiments such as chili sauce as well as the ubiquitous fish sauce. Pho is popular for breakfast, but it can serve as a midday, afternoon, or even evening snack as well.
- Bun cha
Bun cha, otherwise referred to as vermicelli noodles made from rice, is another popular food item on the streets of Vietnam. Bun cha usually comes with a flavoursome (and filling) array of sides, including grilled pork, the triumvirate of herbs (cilantro, basil, and mint), bean shoots or sprouts, and pickled vegetables. Of course, you can’t try Bun cha without the ever-present Vietnamese staple – Nuoccham, which is simply a tasty and spicy dipping sauce made with a mix of lime juice, garlic, sugar, chilies, and fish sauce.
- Banh mi
Who likes sandwiches? Most everyone does, and you wouldn’t regret trying out the Vietnamese version of a sandwich: Banh mi. This scrumptious sandwich is a mix of east and west, with the French baguette and a combination of common Vietnamese ingredients such as barbecued pork belly, meatballs, fish cakes, and pickled vegetables comprised of Daikon radish, carrots, and, of course, chilies. Add in a dash of cilantro on top, and you’re good to go.
- Spring rolls
Ah, spring rolls. Anyone can identify spring rolls as a wonderful snack. These rolls are wrapped in translucent rice paper and packed with a variety of ingredients, usually with prawns but sometimes with tofu or pork.
