Garwal Culture

Garhwal is known as “Dev Bhumi”. Its culture and history is very old. It dates back to seventh and eight century AD. It was during this time Yavans started capturing the most part of plains in India.

During this period, many kings left their kingdoms and came to Uttaranchal with their families, army and priests and permanently settled there. The major portion of inhabitants of Garhwal consists of Rajputs. Second major population is of Brahmins. Rest of the population is a mix of other castes.

The culture of Garhwal consists of mix of many cultures.

The essence of nature has remained unchanged even with the changing times. Beauty of Garhwal is unmatched. It is blessed with beautiful springs, hills, varieties of herbs and flowers. Culture of this place also gives attractive appeal. The folk dances, songs and festivals of this place are unmatched. The art and craft of this culture are very appealing.

The events of history, freedom fights and community functions are celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm. There are various dances which are rhythmic and lively. Every region has dance of its own. People of this state actively take part in every activity. Lot of population consists of artisans and farmers.

Modernization has also touched this region. But still people of this belt do not forget their culture and traditions. They still perform various old age practices to keep the memories of past alive.

There are celebrations to mark the arrival of seasons and harvest. There are various celebrations to mark the worship of Goddess “Durga” by Rajput community. Every year a number of fairs are held which attracts number of tourists. Artisans of the place very fondly display their creations and hand works.

The culture of Garhwal finds manifestation in the lifestyle of its people. There are dances like “Pandava lila” which is popularly known as “Chakruvyuh”. It is enacted in various villages. Villagers dressed in various attires resembling the characters of Mahabharat perform the episode where Abhimanyu, the son of Arjun was killed by seven Kauravas in circular battle-formation.
